He is an artist whose main interest lies in presenting, through the fluent flow of his narrative and an attitude towards life which is amused but, non-condescending. The promise of sacrificing Nitya’s hair was made when he was only two years old but the parents forgot to fulfill it. A promise is made about an individual during his infancy, a state where one’s opinions are not formed. Nitya gives many arguments to his parents – â€Å"It doesn’t concern me, your twenty-year-old promise. You had no business to pawn my scalp without consulting me.† Narayan doesn’t believe in painting an ideal portrait of his characters. His characters are realistic and lively. They are natural and are present in our surroundings. At six on Friday morning Nitya notices a preparation at home for the trip. His Mother packs lunch for three and fills a basket with coconut, flowers and incense for worship at the temple. Father searches the record of their promise to God. Mother too, remembers knotted coin in a piece of cloth as a reminder. Prior to this, Narayan mentions the fact that the family was going through a legal battle ove r a dispute in their property. The case continued long enough to transform the once ‘scintillating youth of promise’, which is their lawyer, into a ‘toothless character in a frayed gown’, as mentioned in the story. The lawyer is symbolic of the passage of time. One generation decides to offer their son’s hair to the Lord but forgets it with time. The now grown up son, in a whole new generation, in a time period afresh, is adamant on not giving into his parents’ blind superstitions and argues rationally. Nitya’s final attempt to avoid the journey is to puckishly utter the words â€Å"Did I ask for it?†, but is disarmed when his mother starts sobbing. The older generation’s victory is noticeable in Nitya’s father’s triumphant look with his son by his side on the bus to the temple. On their way, the urban Nitya is tossed and jolted in the jerking bus to his great discomfort, contrasting to the relaxed chatting and joking of his co-passengers. Nitya’s father calls up the headman after reaching the temple and asks the priest to open it. Nitya’s father tells him that they have to leave by the evening bus to which the latter proposes to spend the night at the rest house. But again, Nitya objects to this. His parents try to calm him. After sometime the priest comes and sends a boy to call upon the barber, Raghavan, but his house is locked. At this, the priest suggests, as a compromise, that one lock of Nitya’s hair can also be sacrificed and the vow will be fulfilled. Nitya agrees to give four inches of his front lock. But after no time the barber himself comes, ruining whatever little hopes he had. He says, â€Å"I agreed to give four inches of hair; it was up to you to have taken it now. You have lost the opportunity, which must be seized by the forelock.† The priest asks him not to hurt his parent’s feelings and requests to move on the platform where the barber is ready. Nitya retorts to the priest and says,†Have you no logic or reason?†- a naked truth which the young Nitya doesn’t believe in sugarcoating. Nitya’s mother and father cry at the same time not to talk to the priest like that in his own temple. Nitya is angry and hungry too, as his parents do not let him touch even one plantain out of the dozens offered by the villagers under the tree. Nitya abruptly leaves the place saying that he will wait for both of them at the bus stop, while his parents stare helplessly at him. The story comes to an end without a definite solution to the tonsure problem. Maybe this indicates that the issue of generation gap will remain insoluble for an indefinite period of time. Narayan’s stories present situations which are relevant not only during Narayan’s period of time but also in the present day scenario. His ‘Indianness’ has a distinctive character of his own, as what he writes are experiences through which he has lived through. Gregor, in The Metamorphosis goes through a transformation. He has changed into a giant insect, thus beginning a new physical life. But Gregor clings to his ideals, his strongly held beliefs of family that root themselves from his own insecurity. This causes Gregor much grief as the physical body starts to wear its impression onto his mind. Although it didnt take long for Gregor to adapt in the physical sense, he never really adopts the true reality of the situation. He held onto his illusion of humanity because he clung to his idealism. This lack of mental adaptation caused Gregors ultimate downfall, but as he saw it, it was a noble sacrifice. So for Gregor not to adapt to this situation with a fundamental change in ideology was a fatal flaw in Gregors personality. Sure enough, we are all Gregors in a sense, we all believe in something, be it a religion, or the perpetual love of our parents. In this short story Kafka mirrors the effect of faith and morals into Gregor, suggesting that the static nature of these ideals will, in the right context lead to a persons ultimate demise.Nora, the doll-like mother from Henrik Ibsens A Dolls House shows the human capacity for adaptation, and the effect these changes have on various aspects of an individual. In the beginning of the play, Nora was a very doll-like character, more plastic than human. Nora showed very little sign of having an original thought of her own, and dumbly fondled her way along life to the condescending comments of her arrogant husband, Helmer. When confronted with the possibility of Helmers death due to his own stubborn nature, she had taken a leap of faith into a loan of money, one that she would seemingly never pay back. She initially displayed this money as an act of goodwill on her fathers behalf, mainly to suppress undue commentary from Helmer. Through this act we start to see the first hints of dynamic change in Nora. Events in the story lead to Noras eventual independence quite rapidly upon the introduction of Kristine, and the revelation of the truth surrounding her fathers death and the loan. Noras unsympathetic nature towards her fathers death suggests a deeper material to her seemingly plastic shell. As the story progresses, we find many more forward changes in the personality of Nora. Her longing to say .. .Bloody Hell is among the most prominent signs of mental change in her character. Her complete transformation is realized at the end of the play when she finally leaves her husband. This is a far cry from the Nora first introduced. Her dynamic change as a protagonist is a change of values, a revelation in the way she handles situations. She is now blunt and independent, no longer searching for her husbands mocking approval. Nora is the embodiment of change in our world, she represents a change of ideology from the old ways, to the new ways. In A Dolls House Ibsen connects Nora with the tides of change in humanity, showing that a change in ideology can result in the casting off of our dependence on the Helmers, who represent the status quo. Anaphylaxis is a condition related to acute allergic reactions. Following the bodys exposure to the offending allergen, there are common systemic reactions. The most serious reactions involve the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, but the gastrointestinal, dermatologic, and genitourinary systems are often involved causing varied symptoms such as urticaria, flushing, angioedema, bronchospasm, hypotension, cardiac arrythmias, nausea, intestinal cramps, pruritus, and finally uterine cramps. (Physician Assistant, 8/94) The above list is by no means exhaustive, specific symptoms vary from person to person. The same person suffering from several anaphylactic reactions can also present with differing symptoms. Physiologically speaking, the two main effects of the bodys released mediators (IgE) during an anaphylactic reaction are smooth muscle contraction and vasodilatation, which cause most of the bodys adverse symptoms. (JAMA, 11/26/82) Since the most life threatening reactions usually involve the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, that is where emergency treatment is focused. In the cardiovascular system, a combination of vasodilatation, increased vascular permeability, tachcycardia, and arrhythmias can lead to severe hypotension. In the respiratory system, the swelling of tissues along with bronchospasm and increased mucus production are the main cause of death. So, if untreated, anaphylaxis can be fatal as a result of the bodys going into what is essentially shock, while simultaneously (and more importantly) being deprived of the oxygen needed to sustain life. As of today there is one universally accepted treatment for acute anaphylaxis. Epinephrine. Epinephrine is both an alpha and a beta agonist. This makes it the drug optimally suited to treat anaphylaxis. Epinephrine will increase vascular resistance, reduce vascular permeability, produce bronchodilation and increase cardiac output. (Emergency, 10/93) Epinephrine will directly counteract the potentially life threatening aspects of anaphylaxis. Epinephrine can , and is, used in the both the pre-hospital environment as well as in definitive care institutions. Epinephrine is widely administered by ALS providers the world over. The drug is so effective that and relatively simple to use that subcutaneous administration of epinephrine by EMT-Bs trained in recognition of anaphylaxis is safe. (Annals of Emergency Medicine, 6/95) Following the administration of epinephrine, antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine, and promethazine can be administered. These agents block the harmful effects of histamine, a mediator associated with allergic reactions, and while not displacing histamine from receptors, they compete with histamine for receptor cites and therefore block additional histamine from binding. (JEMS, 4/95) Patients taking beta adrenergic blocking agents will have limited benefits from the administration of epinephrine (it being a beta agent), as well potentially unopposed alpha adrenergic effects that could result in severe hypertension. Aminophylline, a bronchodilator and diuretic can also increase intracellular cAMP levels, as well as potentiating catecholamines and stimulating their release; these effects make it a useful tool in dealing with persistent bronchospasm. (Physician Assistant, 8/94) Even though steroids (glucocorticosteroids) have some potentially beneficial effects for the relief of bronchospasm and hypotension, they are not recommended for the treatment of acute anaphylactic symptoms due to the fact that it takes four to six hours for them to be effective. Thomson. * Sir Joseph John Thomson was born December 18, 1856 in Cheetham Hill near Manchester, England. * His dad was a bookkeeper in Manchester who died with Thomson was 16 years old. * He entered Owens College, now known as the Victoria University of Manchester, at age 14. * There he took courses in experimental physics and math. * In 1876, he obtained a scholarship for Trinity College, University of Cambridge, and remained there for the rest of his life. * In 1890, he married Rose Elisabeth. * He and Rose had a son, Sir George Paget Thomson, Emeritus Professor of Physics at London University, and a daughter. * Thomson taught mathematics and physics at Cambridge, succeeding Lord Rayleigh as professor of physics at the age of 27. * He became director of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory to do research from 1884 through 1919. * For his involvement in the scientific community, he was appointed president of the Royal Society, a position he maintained from 1915 through 1920. * He was invited to be professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institute of Great Britain from 1905 to 1918. * He served as master of Trinity College from 1918 until his death. * He was also very active in many other fields of interest other than science.
